Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has declared Monday, October 6, 2025, as a work-free day for all teachers in the state in celebration of World Teachers’ Day.
The governor made the announcement during the 2025 Teachers’ Day celebration held at the Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta. The declaration, according to the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, is aimed at allowing teachers across the state to fully participate in the day’s events and reflect on their vital role in nation-building.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Joseph Odufowokan, explained that the decision was a gesture of appreciation for teachers’ dedication to their profession.
Governor Abiodun also used the occasion to highlight several initiatives by his administration to support the education sector, including the construction of 12 blocks of 900 smart classrooms across four schools in different zones of the state. He announced the absorption of 1,000 interns from the OgunTeach scheme into the State Teaching Service Commission, bringing the total number of employed teachers under the scheme to 5,000.
The governor further revealed that his administration had approved the renovation of special schools and an increase in the feeding allowance of pupils in those institutions. In addition, he pledged to begin the payment of transport allowances to all public school teachers in place of the work-free days currently enjoyed by other categories of state workers.
Governor Abiodun commended teachers for their dedication to nurturing future generations, describing them as the foundation of the state’s human capital development.
The work-free day, which falls after the global celebration of World Teachers’ Day, provides teachers in Ogun State an opportunity to rest, celebrate, and engage in professional reflection.
