The Ogun State Government has formally transferred ownership of the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, to the Federal Government following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the institution’s 17th Convocation Ceremony.
With the development, the former TASUED has officially been renamed Tai Solarin Federal University of Education, marking a new phase in the institution’s history and reinforcing collaboration between the Ogun State and Federal Governments on institutional stability, staff welfare, students’ interests and sustainable growth.
Governor Dapo Abiodun, who disclosed this in a statement, described the transfer as a historic step that reflects the state’s commitment to national equity through a more balanced distribution of federal institutions across the country.
According to him, the transition also honours the enduring legacies of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Chief Bisi Onabanjo and the late Awujale of Ijebuland, whose contributions to education remain significant.
The governor noted that Ogun State remains committed to strengthening the education sector, adding that a total of ₦275.4 billion was allocated to education in the state’s 2026 budget to expand access, reduce inequality and ensure inclusive learning for all children, irrespective of background, tribe or religion.
Abiodun expressed satisfaction that the transfer process was completed seamlessly without disrupting the university’s academic standing, noting that the institution currently maintains 100 per cent programme accreditation.
He also commended the Federal Government for its renewed focus on educational reform and stability within the university system, expressing confidence that the takeover would unlock greater opportunities, strengthen teacher education and position the institution for long-term national impact.
“With this handover, we have formally released the institution to the Federal Government, confident that the transition will enhance growth, innovation and national relevance,” the governor stated.
The Ogun State Government also congratulated Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, and Aremo Olusegun Osoba on the conferment of honorary doctorate degrees during the convocation ceremony, describing the honours as recognition of their enduring contributions to education, leadership and national development.
Abiodun said their lives of service remain a source of inspiration to present and future generations of Nigerians.
