Success doesn’t just happen — and for Victor Osimhen, the journey to the top of African football has been shaped by mentors, role models, and personal encounters.
Speaking during a Twitch livestream with Carter Efe, the Super Eagles striker opened up about the key figures who influenced his career, alongside God and his family.
The Galatasaray forward, currently in Nigeria recovering from a broken arm sustained in a UEFA Champions League clash with Liverpool FC, said his inspiration has always been clear.
“In terms of football, everybody knows I draw my inspiration from Didier Drogba. And also the likes of Odion Ighalo,” he said.
Osimhen revealed he recently visited Ighalo, describing the former Super Eagles striker as someone who played a major role in his journey.
“He is someone I love and respect so much… a great football player, a big legend,” he said.
He also shared a personal story about John Obi Mikel, recalling how the ex-Chelsea midfielder supported him during his early days in the national team.
“He asked me to come to his room and he sent me money… he gave me pounds,” Osimhen recounted.
Beyond direct mentors, the striker reflected on the legends he grew up watching — names like Nwankwo Kanu and Jay-Jay Okocha — players who shaped his dreams long before he wore the Super Eagles jersey.
For young Nigerians chasing their own goals, Osimhen’s story is a reminder that who you learn from — and who guides you — can shape how far you go.
