From Sabach Sanjal to Niani, Basse to Fulladu, Jarra West to Kombo East, and finally Kombo South to Serekunda Central, the battle lines have been firmly drawn in the contest for the 2026 Gambia Teacher Prize.
The Jarranka bloc, which has enjoyed successive wins in recent editions of the award, is determined to defend its dominance. However, strong opposition is building across the country, with contenders from the West Coast Region and Upper River Region emerging as serious challengers. The North Bank Region is also being viewed as a potential surprise package, while the Central River Region—often described as the largest region in The Gambia—is expressing confidence that its size and influence could help it mount a decisive challenge, particularly in the Lower River Region contest.
Among the standout finalists is Alpha A. M. Bah of Serekunda Lower Basic School, who impressed the judges with his presentation and demonstrated strong mastery of Mainstreaming Effective Intervention Strategies in School (MEISS). His performance earned praise for its innovation and clarity in addressing classroom challenges.
Another strong contender is Salifu Jallow of Yeldeing Basic Cycle School in Farato, in the West Coast Region. Popularly known as the “Garden Teacher,” he distinguished himself through a blend of classroom instruction and practical agricultural engagement, earning commendation for his hands-on teaching approach.
The competition, which features an all-male lineup of finalists from across the country, is expected to be tightly contested as anticipation continues to grow.
All eyes are now on April 9, 2026, when the winner of the Gambia Teacher Prize will be officially announced.
