The Rwandan High Commissioner of to Nigeria, Ambassador Christophe Bazivamo, has expressed his country’s solidarity with international students at Babcock University while urging them to prioritize peace and unity.
He made the call at the Babcock University International Students Association Cultural Day as part of their annual BUISA Week.
“We proudly stand in solidarity with you, our esteemed students,” Ambassador Bazivamo said, acknowledging the challenges and opportunities that come with studying abroad.
He encouraged them to leverage the event to strengthen relationships, learn from other cultures, and contribute to a positive African narrative.
He also praised their ability to collaborate despite their diverse backgrounds, saying the event had successfully created a vibrant platform to celebrate “shared humanity” and fostered connections among individuals.
In her presentation, guest speaker and Babcock University alumna, Mrs. Misan Olukuade, highlighted the importance of emotional intelligence in cross-cultural interactions and learning.
“In a globally connected world, learning in a multi-cultural environment offers opportunities for cultural exchange, broadening of worldview as well as increased self-confidence,” she said.
She added that these skill-sets acquired within and outside Babcock have enhanced her understanding and expectations of workplace ethics, international relations and culture.
President/Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ademola Tayo, used the occasion to reiterate his administration’s commitment to providing a “home away from home” experience for international students.
“I knew what it felt like to be a foreign student while studying in Sweden so we will do all we can to give our support,” said Prof. Tayo. “Any institution worth its salt today, understands the value of having a diverse student population.”
He expressed appreciation for the diplomatic support of the Rwandan Ambassador and representative of his Equatorial Guinean counterpart, Mr. Juan Segura Yaye.
Aside a Food Fair, the week provided platform for members to showcase their cultural attire, flags, and greetings.
“The event means a lot to me because it gives us a definition of who we are,” said Ralph Kisob, an African American student and BUISA President. “I came from the US to study here because apart from the high academic standards, Babcock University offers strong moral training.”
