Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has announced the renaming of The Polytechnic, Ibadan in honour of the late Victor Omololu Olunloyo, a former governor of the state. The announcement was made as part of efforts to immortalize Olunloyo’s contributions to education and public service in Oyo State.
Victor Omololu Olunloyo served as Governor of Oyo State during Nigeria’s Second Republic, holding office from October 1 to December 31, 1983. His brief tenure was abruptly ended by the military coup led by then-General Muhammadu Buhari, which overthrew the civilian government and ushered in military rule.
Despite his short stay in office, Olunloyo was widely regarded as an intellectual and an advocate for education and development. His legacy, Governor Makinde noted, deserves to be permanently etched in the memory of the state, particularly through an institution known for academic excellence and technical innovation.
The renaming of The Polytechnic, Ibadan has been welcomed by many as a fitting tribute to the late governor’s service and ideals.
The institution, now to be known as Victor Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, will continue to serve as a beacon of learning and development in the South-West region.
