Sudan’s conflict-hit states of Gezira, River Nile, Sennar and White Nile are set to benefit from new service projects worth $62 million, financed by the African Development Bank (AfDB).
During a meeting in Wad Medani on Monday, Gezira State governor Al-Tahir Ibrahim Al-Khair pledged full support for a visiting federal and international team conducting field surveys for the programme. The delegation includes officials from Sudan’s Finance and Health ministries, the Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
**Scope of the Programme**
Delegation head Waleed Suleiman Al-Goani said the AfDB funds will cover projects in health, education and water supply, targeting six localities in each of the four states. IOM health officer Imran Gusaa confirmed the agency will coordinate on-the-ground implementation.
**Rebuilding After Conflict**
Gezira Finance Minister Atif Mohamed Ibrahim Abu Shouck noted that many service facilities were destroyed or looted by militia forces, but the state is prioritising the rehabilitation of electricity, water, health and education networks.
Gezira’s Acting Health Minister Dr. Osama Abdel-Rahman Ahmed Al-Faki added that the state now hosts Sudan’s largest health system and has absorbed displaced health workers and citizens fleeing violence in Khartoum. Education Director Abdullah Abu Al-Kiram promised full cooperation to provide the data needed for planning, while Urban Planning Minister Dr. Arafa Mahmoud urged the team to fast-track completion of Um Maghad water stations in Al-Kamleen and Medani.
The AfDB-backed initiative is expected to begin once field assessments are complete, offering a critical boost to basic services in areas severely strained by Sudan’s ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis.
