Nigerian football star Victor Osimhen marked his 27th birthday on December 29, celebrating a remarkable journey that has taken him from the streets of Lagos to the summit of world football.
Born on December 29, 1998, in Lagos, Osimhen is the youngest of six children to Patrick and Christiana Osimhen. He grew up in Olusosun, a densely populated community, where life was shaped by hardship and resilience. During his childhood, his mother sold sachet water to support the family—an experience Osimhen has often credited for instilling discipline and determination in him.
Osimhen’s football journey began at Olusosun Primary School, where his talent quickly stood out. He later joined the Ultimate Strikers Academy in Lagos, a move that proved pivotal. His rise to international prominence came in spectacular fashion at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile, where he scored a record 10 goals, leading Nigeria to victory. His performances earned him both the Golden Boot and the Silver Ball, instantly placing him among Africa’s most promising young footballers.
Following the tournament, Osimhen began a professional career in Europe, featuring for VfL Wolfsburg in Germany before revitalising his form at Charleroi in Belgium. He later joined Lille in France, where his goal-scoring exploits attracted attention from Europe’s elite clubs.
In 2020, Osimhen completed a high-profile move to Napoli, where he cemented his status as one of the world’s leading strikers. His time in Italy proved historic. During the 2022/2023 season, Osimhen scored 26 league goals, finishing as Serie A’s top scorer and helping Napoli secure their first league title in 33 years. He also won the Serie A Best Young Player award and the Serie A Footballer of the Year, becoming a fan favourite and a symbol of Napoli’s resurgence.
His performances that year earned him continental recognition, as he was crowned African Footballer of the Year in 2023, further solidifying his place among Africa’s football greats.
Osimhen has since continued his career journey with spells across top European leagues and is currently on the books of Galatasaray, where he remains a key attacking figure and one of the most feared forwards in the Süper Lig.
On the international stage, Osimhen has been equally influential. He is Nigeria’s second-highest goal scorer of all time and has represented the country in multiple Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments, playing a central role in the Super Eagles’ attacking line.
Despite his fame, Osimhen keeps his personal life largely private. He is a father to a daughter, Haly, born in October 2022, a role he has described as one of his greatest sources of motivation.
As Victor Osimhen turns 27, his story continues to inspire millions—one defined by perseverance, talent, and an unyielding belief in possibility. From Olusosun to the world’s biggest stadiums, his rise stands as a powerful reminder of how far determination and opportunity can carry a dream.
