In a night of high drama and unforgettable football in Rabat, Nigeria’s Super Falcons completed a remarkable comeback to defeat hosts Morocco 3-2, clinching their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title.
Down by two goals at halftime after strikes from Moroccan stars Ghizlane Chebbak and Sanaa Mssoudy, the odds seemed stacked against the Nigerians. But the second half told a different story—one of grit, resilience, and unshakable belief.
Esther Okoronkwo ignited the fightback, calmly converting a penalty in the 64th minute after Nouhaila Benzina was penalised for a handball in the box. Just moments later, Okoronkwo turned provider, slicing through the Moroccan defense before assisting Folamide Ijamilusi, who made no mistake in levelling the score.
With just two minutes of regular time left, substitute Jennifer Echegini sealed the victory, finishing off a brilliant move that left the home crowd at the Olympic Stadium stunned.
As the final whistle blew, the Super Falcons dropped to the turf—overcome with emotion and triumph. Dubbed Mission X, Nigeria’s quest to reclaim continental glory after missing out in 2022 has now been completed in emphatic fashion. This victory also preserves their perfect record in WAFCON finals.
Beyond just lifting the trophy, Nigeria has once again stamped its dominance on African women’s football—and inspired a new generation of footballers across the continent.
