They are 42 students in all. And they are also Pioneers in their own way. They were admitted into the pioneering class of the Nursing program of the Federal University of Technology Akure for the 2025/2026 session. Currently, these students are in their 100-level program, undertaking general science courses such as Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Computing, Mathematics, and General Studies.
The Acting Head of the Department of Nursing Science, School of Basic Medical Sciences (SBMS) at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Dr. Sikirulai Olatunde-Jeje, stated that after a successful resource verification by the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) the Nursing programme in FUTA is fully under way.
According to Dr. Jeje, the students will progress to take foundational nursing courses like Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, and Developmental Psychology in their 200-level, alongside nursing-specific courses and in 300-level, they will focus on nursing science, with courses in Pharmacology and Pathology.
Dr. Jeje also noted that in 400-500 levels, the students are expected to also take professional exams to become Registered Nurses, Registered Midwives, or Public Health Nurses, with a requirement to pass at least one of two exams that is organized by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN). He stated that alongside theory classes, the students will acquire clinical experience through postings and Industrial Training (IT), with the goal of equipping them with the right skills, experience, and values like compassion and empathy to excel as nurses.
The Acting HOD further stated that the department is currently developing and structures are being put in place to drive progress and support the students’ training.
Class representative of the pioneering nursing students at FUTA, Orimoloye Gbemisola said her journey in FUTA so far has been exciting and challenging, with engaging lectures despite the stress of a demanding program. Orimoloye said though they lack senior mentorship, but they have adapted well and received warmth from lecturers of the institution.
She said her aspiration to be a health practitioner drove her to choose FUTA for its substantive education adding that being part of the pioneer set has challenges, but they are doing well and hopeful for a brighter future emphasing her love for FUTA as a true seat of knowledge which shapes destinies.
Another pioneering nursing student at FUTA, Osolobri Evi-Jane, shared her experience as a student in the program. She admitted that initially, Akure city was new to her, but she has since adapted well to the environment, describing it as conducive. Osolobri praised the lecturers, stating that they are receptive and make classes enjoyable.
She revealed that she chose FUTA specifically for its strong education system, knowing it would provide her with the ideal environment to grow and develop as a person. With the knowledge she gains from FUTA, Osolobri hopes to become a better individual, gain valuable experience, and ultimately make a positive impact on communities struggling with medical aid.
Osolobri expressed her excitement about being a pioneer student, acknowledging that it comes with its challenges. However, she is optimistic that she and her classmates will rise to the occasion, become mentors, and make a lasting, positive impact on the school.
A male nursing student at FUTA, Oguntunbi Timileyin, shared his positive experience in the program, stating that classes have been great, thanks to the dedicated lecturers who go the extra mile to impart knowledge. He expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the lecturers, noting that they are committed to helping students succeed.
Oguntunbi revealed that he chose nursing as a career path because he has always been passionate about becoming a medical practitioner, and saw this as an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. He shared that when he came to FUTA, he was immediately drawn to the ‘Futarians’ vibe, which solidified his decision to join the university and pursue his studies in nursing.
Looking ahead, Oguntunbi expressed his hopes that FUTA will equip him with the necessary skills and knowledge to make a positive impact in patients’ lives, become a great nurse, and ultimately make his school proud. He is enthusiastic about his journey and is committed to making the most of his time at FUTA to achieve his goals.
