The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is a prominent examining body established in 1952 to coordinate examinations and award certificates comparable to those of equivalent examining authorities internationally. Its creation stemmed from the urgent need to standardise education assessment across Anglophone West Africa, ensuring consistency, credibility and regional recognition.
WAEC operates across five English-speaking West African countries: Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, The Gambia and Liberia. These member nations collaborate under WAEC to administer public examinations at the secondary school level, the most notable being the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The WASSCE is conducted in two main diets: the May/June school examination and the November/December private candidate examination. It serves as a critical gateway for students transitioning to tertiary education or entering the workforce, and its certificates are widely recognised both within and beyond the continent.
WAEC also plays an advisory role to its member governments on educational matters and is committed to upholding standards of excellence, fairness and integrity in assessment. Through its initiatives, the Council contributes significantly to regional integration and educational development in West Africa.
