President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of the governing council and principal officers for the newly established Federal University of Environment and Technology, located in Koroma/Saakpenwa, Ogoni, Rivers State.
Professor Don Baridam, an expert in Organizational Behaviour and former academic at the University of Port Harcourt, has been named the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council. Also from the South-South region, Professor Chinedu Mmom has been appointed Vice-Chancellor. Mmom is a professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Management at the University of Port Harcourt and a former Commissioner for Education in Rivers State.
The appointments reflect a diverse and inclusive national spread. Other members of the governing council include:

Hamid Adekunle (South-West)
Chima Oji (South-East)
Abdullahi Lamda (North-West)
Key administrative roles at the institution have also been filled. Mpigi Douglas (South-South) will serve as Registrar, Zoryii Nwaimanie (North-Central) as Bursar, and Saghanen Ntogo (South-South) as Librarian.
The new university, designed to drive innovation and sustainability in environmental science and technology, is expected to admit its first cohort of students in September 2025.
President Tinubu signed the bill establishing the institution into law on February 3, 2025. The appointments signal a crucial step toward operationalizing the university and expanding higher education opportunities in the Niger Delta and beyond.
