The University of Ibadan (UI) and the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have achieved a historic milestone by breaking into the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings’ top 1,000 list, marking a major leap for Nigerian higher education.
According to the THE Sub-Saharan Africa Insights 2026 report released on Thursday, Nigeria leads the region with 24 universities, the highest representation across Sub-Saharan Africa — surpassing South Africa’s 13 institutions and far ahead of other countries such as Ghana, Kenya, and Uganda.
Nigeria Tops Sub-Saharan Representation
Data from THE shows a dramatic regional rise in participation over the past decade — from just 10 universities less than 10 years ago to 55 institutions from 14 countries in 2026. Nigeria alone accounts for nearly 44% of the region’s total representation, underscoring its growing footprint in global academia.
While South Africa still dominates performance metrics, with four of its universities ranked among the top 500 worldwide, Nigeria’s upward movement signals a deepening shift in Africa’s educational landscape.
> “We are not just seeing more African universities ranked — we’re seeing improvements in quality,” said Phil Baty, THE’s Chief Global Affairs Officer. “This is an opportunity for Africa to invest strategically in research, innovation, and development.”
Top Nigerian Performers
Both UI and UNILAG ranked in the 801–1,000 global band, joining Uganda’s Makerere University and Ghana’s University of Cape Coast in the same category. Meanwhile, Bayero University Kano (BUK), Covenant University, and Landmark University followed in the 1,001–1,200 range, reflecting Nigeria’s widening academic influence.
Within Nigeria, UI reclaimed the top spot domestically for 2026 after ranking fourth last year. UNILAG secured second place, followed by BUK, Covenant, and Landmark.
Regional Leaders
The top 10 Sub-Saharan universities in the 2026 ranking are dominated by South African institutions, with the University of Cape Town (UCT) leading the continent at 164th globally, its highest-ever position. Stellenbosch University and the University of the Witwatersrand both appeared in the 301–350 band, while the University of Johannesburg entered the top 400 for the first time.

Global Context
THE noted that while Asian universities such as Tsinghua and the National University of Singapore continue to perform strongly, their growth rates are slowing. In contrast, several U.S. and European universities are facing funding cuts and political constraints — factors THE believes could create room for African universities to expand their global influence.
The 2026 ranking, analysts say, underscores the continent’s academic progress and signals a turning point for Nigeria’s higher education system, which is increasingly aligning with international research and quality benchmarks.
