The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has dismissed as fake a circular currently in circulation which claims to outline guidelines for the repayment of loans obtained through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
In an official statement issued on Friday and signed by the University Management, UNIBEN clarified that the purported circular did not originate from the institution and should be completely disregarded by students, staff and members of the public.
The university warned NELFUND beneficiaries and the wider university community against acting on the document, stressing that it was neither authorised nor issued through any recognised channel of the institution.
According to the statement, UNIBEN emphasised that no repayment guidelines have been released by either the NELFUND office or the Federal Government at this time.
“The University reiterates that neither the NELFUND Office nor the Federal Government has issued any guideline on repayment of NELFUND loans,” the statement read.
The institution urged students and other stakeholders to rely solely on official communications from the university and relevant government agencies for verified information on the student loan scheme.
UNIBEN also advised members of the public to remain vigilant and avoid the spread of unverified documents capable of causing unnecessary panic among students who are beneficiaries of the federal student loan programme.
The statement was dated January 24, 2026.
