A N140 million electricity project designed to provide uninterrupted power supply to the Faculty of Arts at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has been unveiled.
The initiative, titled “Light Up Faculty of Arts University of Lagos,” was spearheaded by the UNILAG Alumni Association and funded by philanthropist Chief Tunde Fanimokun, who attended the unveiling ceremony.
The project is aimed at addressing persistent power challenges caused by national grid failures, ensuring that classrooms, offices and study areas within the faculty continue to function without disruption.
Speaking at the event, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Prof. Ilupeju Mudashiru, expressed excitement over the development, noting that the faculty’s electricity demand is particularly high due to its infrastructure.
“Our faculty operates three lifts, has over 40 classrooms per floor, and numerous offices. Whenever the national grid fails, the university generator cannot sustain us because of our high consumption. This project will ensure evening programmes continue uninterrupted and restore the faculty’s standing as a top learning environment,” she said.
Chief Fanimokun, who has supported several educational initiatives nationwide, reaffirmed his commitment to investing in education.
“I am wholeheartedly doing this, and I am here to support UNILAG. I believe God has blessed me, and I should be a blessing to others. This project is part of our broader effort to invest in educational institutions, which has already benefited about 12 universities across Nigeria,” he stated.
He disclosed that discussions around the project began on November 11, 2025, and expressed satisfaction that the vision had now been realised.
Also speaking, the First National Vice President of the UNILAG Alumni Association, Dr Bala Yesufu, described the project as a significant milestone for both the alumni body and the Faculty of Arts.
“The project is ‘Light Up Faculty of Arts,’ which indirectly means we are lighting up the university. It provides alternative energy for the faculty. We are happy about what is happening and we thank Chief Tunde Fanimokun for his kind gesture towards the university,” Yesufu said.
He added that the philanthropist has pledged further support for the institution, noting that several additional projects are already in the pipeline.
The initiative is expected to enhance academic activities, support evening programmes and improve the overall learning environment within the Faculty of Arts.
