The Faculty of Law, University of Lagos (UNILAG) has honoured forty-three (43) of its alumni who graduated with First-Class honours at the 2024 Nigerian Law School (NLS) Bar Examinations — one of the highest tallies by a single university in Nigeria.
The recognition ceremony, held on October 1 at the Faculty Boardroom, brought together faculty members, students, alumni, and dignitaries, including Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, Honourable Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, and Prof. Oyelowo Oyewo, SAN.
Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics & Research), Professor Bola Oboh, described the achievement as a reaffirmation of UNILAG’s legacy of academic excellence. She urged the new lawyers to embody integrity and professionalism in their practice.
The Dean of Law, Professor Abiola Sanni, SAN, praised the graduates’ “stellar performance,” noting that it reflected the Faculty’s uncompromising academic standards. He also highlighted recent milestones, including a strategic partnership with the University of Dundee (UK) aimed at expanding international collaboration.
In goodwill messages, Dr. Oduwole and Prof. Oyewo charged the honourees to remain loyal ambassadors of UNILAG and contribute to national development.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of commemorative medals to the 43 graduates by Dr. Oduwole and Prof. Oboh — a gesture that symbolised both personal accomplishment and institutional pride.
Alumni Association Unveils New Initiatives
The ceremony also served as a platform for the UNILAG Alumni Association to announce bold new projects.
Engr. Ife Oyedele, FNSE, Worldwide President of the Alumni Association, unveiled plans to launch the UNILAG Alumni App, a digital platform to connect graduates globally, foster mentorship, and celebrate achievements. He also announced the construction of a 1,800-bed hostel facility to enhance student welfare.
Drawing parallels with top global universities, Oyedele encouraged the new lawyers to join the alumni network and contribute to the university’s growth.
A Celebration of Legacy and Innovation
The event underscored UNILAG’s dual mission of preserving academic excellence while embracing innovation. The stellar performance of its graduates at the Bar Examinations reaffirmed its academic leadership, while the Alumni Association’s initiatives signaled a forward-looking commitment to transformation.
