The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has dismissed reports circulating online that the institution has increased tuition fees for the 2025/2026 academic session, clarifying that the recent adjustments on its payment portal reflect a consolidation of existing charges, not a fee hike.
In a statement signed by Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, Head of the Communication Unit, the university explained that the new payment structure merges previously separate faculty and departmental dues into a single, unified system.
According to the statement, the move follows a directive from the Federal Ministry of Education requiring all universities whose students benefit from the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to consolidate fees into one payment structure. The measure aims to ensure that once students pay through the official university portal, no additional payments are demanded at the faculty or departmental levels.
“The University wishes to reassure students, parents, and the general public that there has been no fee hike,” the statement read. “What has taken place is a consolidation of approved dues that students previously paid separately at the faculty and departmental levels.”
UNILAG management noted that the consolidated system will make it easier for NELFUND to process and cover all student-related fees efficiently. It also emphasized that differences in payable amounts across programmes are due to varying academic requirements and not an indication of any new or increased charges.
The statement concluded with an appeal for calm and understanding, reaffirming the university’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and maintaining its “legacy of excellence” in serving students and stakeholders alike.
