The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Management, on Monday, turned the spotlight on its gallant student-athletes who flew the institution’s flag high at recent national and international sports competitions.
At a colourful reception on campus, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, cheered the winners and decorated them with their hard-earned medals.
Among the celebrated teams:
Hockey Squad: Twelve players and two coaches did the university proud at the 5-Aside Male and Female Hockey Championship in Akungba, Ondo State (July 18–25). The ladies struck gold, while the men battled to a respectable silver finish.
Beach Soccer Kings: Eleven players and two coaches made waves at the 2025 Lagos State Higher Institution Beach Soccer Competition (July 26, Atican Beach, Lekki). They netted bronze plus a cool ₦100,000 cash prize.
FISU Games Ambassadors: Three athletes (two judokas and one badminton player) carried Nigeria’s colours at the 2025 FISU Games in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany (July 16–26). They earned the ticket after ousting rivals at the Nigeria University Games trials in Jos.
In her charge, Prof. Ogunsola hailed the athletes as “proud ambassadors of UNILAG,” lauding their resilience, creativity, and sportsmanship. She equally praised the Sports Council Chairman, Professor Alabi Shoneye, and the coaching crew for steering the teams with “purposeful direction.”
The athletes, in turn, gifted the VC a team jersey as a token of gratitude.
