The University of Lagos (UNILAG) underscored its unwavering commitment to growth, partnership, and legacy-building on Saturday, June 21, 2025, during a remarkable evening of celebration and strategic engagement with stakeholders, alumni, and institutional partners.
Held at the Jelili Omotola Multipurpose Hall, the high-profile banquet, organised by the Office of Advancement, brought together distinguished personalities—ranging from eminent alumni to influential donors—who have played pivotal roles in supporting the institution’s progress.
From 3:30 p.m., guests were welcomed to an ambience of sophistication, marked by a red carpet reception and soothing live saxophone performances. The atmosphere exuded elegance and nostalgia as attendees explored an exhibition of UNILAG’s recent developmental strides. The showcased projects, supported by various donors and partners, reaffirmed the University’s pursuit of excellence and transparency.
By 5:00 p.m., the banquet formally commenced with a welcome address from Chief Bayo Ojo, SAN, CON, Chairman of the UNILAG Advancement Board. He called for sustained unity and commitment to the alma mater. This was followed by a vibrant cultural display by the UNILAG Troupe, a tribute to the institution’s rich heritage.
In his keynote remarks, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Chief Wole Olanipekun, SAN, CFR, stressed the imperative of alumni involvement in university advancement. “Government alone cannot fund education,” he noted, urging alumni to be intentional in giving back to the institution that nurtured their dreams.
One of the evening’s most poignant moments came with the address by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS. She praised the optimism and resilience of UNILAG alumni and lauded their enduring support and belief in the University’s vision. “We are not just asking for donations,” she said, “we are inviting you to invest in something bigger than us all—the enduring impact and excellence of our university.”
The evening also featured a documentary interlude highlighting key institutional milestones, followed by a passionate pledge appeal led by the President Worldwide of the UNILAG Alumni Association, Engr. Ife Oyedele, FNSE. Another soulful saxophone performance added grace and emotional resonance to the occasion.
In her closing remarks, Director of the Office of Advancement, Dr. Taiwo Ipaye, expressed heartfelt gratitude to all attendees for their continuous support, describing them as co-architects of the UNILAG dream. A grand group photograph brought the night to a close, symbolising unity, legacy, and shared purpose.
Dignitaries at the event included the Ogbeni Oja of Ijebuland and former President of the UNILAG Alumni Association, Olorogun Sonny Kuku; former Ogun State Governor, Senator Gbenga Daniel; and three Justices of the Supreme Court, among others.
This gathering reaffirmed that the University of Lagos draws its strength not only from its illustrious history but from the passionate network of individuals committed to shaping its future.
