The University of Lagos Law Alumni Class of 1985 has been praised for renovating key facilities at the Faculty of Law and donating ₦10 million to support indigent students as part of activities marking its 40th anniversary.
The commendation came at the weekend during the official handover of the refurbished restrooms to the faculty.
Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, Professor Taiwo Osipitan hailed the Class of ’85 for its generosity and steady commitment to the university’s growth. He said lecturers serve as “trustees to the students they teach,” adding that alumni support continues to strengthen UNILAG’s mission of providing world-class legal education.
Osipitan highlighted the strength of the Faculty of Law, noting that it has 21 professors and eight Senior Advocates of Nigeria— a record unmatched by any other law faculty in the country.
President of the UNILAG Alumni Association Worldwide, Ifeoluwa Oyedele, also applauded the group for addressing a critical need affecting student welfare. He encouraged other alumni sets to support the university through the UNILAG alumni mobile app.
Comparing global standards, he noted Harvard’s $57.3 billion endowment against UNILAG’s ₦1 billion fund, stressing the need for stronger alumni participation.
Beyond the renovation, the Class of 1985 also announced a ₦10 million endowment fund for academically qualified students facing financial hardship.
Project Chairman Adetunji Orisalade—represented by his son, Damilola—gave a brief on the renovation before Justice Bisi Akinlade led members of the class in the ceremonial handover.
Earlier, former NCC Director of Legal Services, Yetunde Akinloye, described the anniversary as emotional, recalling the distinguished lecturers who shaped their journey—including Professor Omotola, Agbede, Abiola Ojo, Adeyemi, Akanki, Adesanya, Anifalaje and former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
Dean of the Faculty, Professor Abiola Sanni, thanked the alumni, describing their gesture as a seed that would inspire others.
Notable members present included Taiwo Kupolati (SAN), Olusegun Akinloye, Justice Olabisi Akinlade, Justice Yetunde Adesanya, Akin Falade, Professor Kunle Aina and Adedeji Adeshina.
