University of Lagos (UNILAG) has entered into a strategic partnership with the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, aimed at boosting research, enhancing STEMM education, and expanding opportunities for staff training, student exchange, and entrepreneurship development.
The agreement was formalised during a high-level meeting at UNILAG’s Senate Chamber on Thursday, 7 August 2025. The session was attended by Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr Moruf Tunji Alausa; the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Dr Chris Maiyaki; and the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Mr Sonny Echono.
Leading the visiting delegation, University of Birmingham Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adam Tickell, said the collaboration would serve as a platform for joint research projects, innovation in teaching, and knowledge exchange between Nigeria and the UK.
UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, described the partnership as a step towards positioning the institution as a global academic hub. “This is about equipping our students and staff with the resources, networks, and expertise they need to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world,” she stated.
Minister Alausa reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting such collaborations, noting that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is prioritising policies that make Nigeria a leader in academic innovation across Africa.
The meeting concluded with all parties agreeing on a structured framework with clear timelines to ensure sustainable outcomes. TETFund and the NUC pledged to provide both technical and financial backing to support the initiatives.
