The United Nations has opened applications for the 2026 Nippon Foundation Fellowship Programme, a fully funded initiative designed to strengthen global expertise in ocean governance, international law, and sustainable development.
The prestigious programme offers professionals from developing countries the opportunity to participate in a nine-month research and training fellowship, including a placement at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The fellowship aims to equip participants with advanced knowledge and practical skills to contribute to policymaking and governance in ocean affairs and related fields.
Programme Structure
The fellowship is structured in two consecutive phases.
Participants will first undertake advanced academic research at selected host institutions worldwide before proceeding to a professional placement at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
Possess at least a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification
Be between 25 and 45 years old
Be currently employed by a government agency, non-governmental organisation, or academic institution
Demonstrate the capacity to conduct independent academic research
Show commitment to policy development and governance related to ocean affairs, sustainable development, or international law
Professionals from developing countries are strongly encouraged to apply.
Fellowship Benefits
Selected fellows will receive comprehensive financial support, including:
Monthly stipend throughout the programme
Round-trip economy class airfare between the fellow’s home country and New York
Book allowance and medical insurance
While fellows receive financial support, they are responsible for securing their accommodation during the programme.
