For many graduates of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), the annual alumni convention in Lagos was more than a reunion — it was a moment to reconnect, reflect, and prepare the next generation for life beyond the university walls.
With the theme “The Future is Now,” the convention, held at Welcome Hotels, Airport Road, Ikeja, brought together alumni from different generations to strengthen networks, foster mentorship, and discuss how to integrate Generation Z into the association’s activities.
Speaking with journalists, the Global President of the UNIZIK Alumni Association, Professor Ikechukwu Umeh, said the event focused on the association’s future growth and impact.
“Our university has produced thousands of graduates, and now we are looking at the new generation — the Gen Zs,” he said. “We have a mix of Gen X, Y, and Z here. The question is, how do we harness our strengths to make a great impact in our alma mater?”
Umeh explained that the theme was chosen to inspire members to embrace new ideas and trends for a stronger, forward-looking university community. He added that the gathering also celebrated cultural pride.
“If you look around, nobody here is wearing a foreign attire. We are all proudly Nigerian,” he said.
Chairman of the Lagos branch, Mr. Kenneth Okoli, stressed the importance of personal and financial planning, urging members to prepare for uncertainties.
“Globally, economies are struggling. So, we must plan our lives, families, and finances wisely,” he advised. “If you don’t plan, you’ve already planned to fail.”
Since its establishment in 1991, Nnamdi Azikiwe University has built a legacy of academic excellence and research-driven education, producing graduates who continue to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s growth and development.
