The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed claims that it directed schools to limit subject choices for students sitting the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
In a statement on Tuesday, the Council’s spokesperson, Moyosola Adeshina, described the reports as false and baseless, stressing that WAEC never issued any such directive.
“WAEC wishes to categorically distance itself from this unfounded assumption,” the statement said. “The Council did not restrict students from offering any subjects for WASSCE 2026 as alleged.”
WAEC clarified that the development and regulation of school curricula in Nigeria are handled by the Federal Government, while the Council’s role is simply to conduct examinations in line with approved policies.
The examination body urged schools, parents, and students to disregard the misleading information and rely only on official updates from WAEC.
It assured that all candidates will have equal opportunities to be assessed fairly in the 2026 examination.
