Applications are now open for the 2025 MasterCard Foundation Scholarship at Makerere University, Uganda. This prestigious, fully funded scholarship supports academically talented, economically disadvantaged African students in pursuing undergraduate and master’s degrees.
About the Scholarship
The MasterCard Foundation has renewed its partnership with Makerere University for a second phase of its Scholars Program running from 2023 to 2034. Over this period, 1,000 scholarships will be awarded for both undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the university’s main campus.
This initiative aims to develop the next generation of African leaders who will drive change in their communities.
Scholarship Benefits
Selected scholars will receive:
Full tuition coverage
Accommodation at Makerere University
Meals and essential supplies
A laptop computer
Monthly living stipend
Health insurance
Travel costs (one return flight during the study period)
Visa processing fees (once per study period)
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the MasterCard Foundation Scholarship, applicants must:
Undergraduate Applicants:
Have completed Advanced Level education (or equivalent) in an African country
Be under 28 years old at the time of application
Master’s Applicants:
Hold a bachelor’s degree obtained in an African country
Be under 35 years old at the time of application
Special Consideration for Refugees and Persons with Disabilities:
Refugee applicants must provide official proof of status
Maximum age for undergraduates: 32 years
Maximum age for master’s: 40 years
All applicants must:
Be eligible for admission into Makerere University
Demonstrate leadership skills and community service experience
Not be recipients of any other scholarship

Certified academic transcripts and certificates
Motivation letter (max 500 words) for master’s applicants
Hand-drawn map of the applicant’s residence/home
Proof of refugee status (if applicable)
