…Advocates Equal Digital Opportunities for Girls
The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) on Monday, 13th October, 2025, joined the global community to commemorate the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child with the theme “Digital Generation: Our Generation.” The event, held at the Board’s Multi-Purpose Hall, Maryland, Ikeja , featured Pupils, Educators, Mother’s Association and other stakeholders in basic education.
The celebration aimed to raise awareness on gender inclusion, promote equal access to education, and empower girls with digital skills to thrive in the modern world.
The Executive Chairman LASUBEB, Dr. Hakeem Shittu dotted the importance of digital literacy and inclusivity in education, noting that empowering girls with technological competence is key to achieving equality and innovation.
The SUBEB Chairman who was represented by the Board Member, Mrs. Sijuade Idowu – Tiamiyu highlighted the commitment of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s administration through the education transformative agenda which focuses on infrastructural renewal, technology-driven learning, teachers development, and welfare enhancement. She added that the “Plus” in the THEMES+ agenda symbolizes inclusivity ensuring that no child, especially the girl child, is left behind in accessing quality basic education and opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
The Guest Speaker, Professor Ayodeji Badejo of the Faculty of Education, Lagos State University, in her lecture titled “Bridging the Gap in the Digital Space,” called for more opportunities for girls in technology-driven fields, describing it as a vital step toward fostering creativity and problem-solving capacity. She acknowledged the benefits of social media in connecting learners but cautioned against excessive use of the internet, which could lead to mental stress. Professor Badejo urged girls to leverage digital tools responsibly and develop innovative solutions that contribute positively to society.
In his remarks, the Board Secretary, Mr. Hakeem Lamidi, emphasized that the annual celebration underscores the urgent need to equip girls with the digital skills and confidence required to succeed in today’s competitive and technology-driven society.
He reaffirmed LASUBEB’s commitment to sustaining programmes and policies that promote equal access to education, digital empowerment, and the overall well-being of every girl child in Lagos State.
Awards were presented to the outstanding members of the Mother’s Association.
