Golden Girl Named as National Student Wellness Ambassador
The Ministry of Education and Technical and Vocational Training in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Wellness announced the appointment of Olympic medalist and national track and field icon Debbie-Ferguson-McKenzie as the National Student Wellness Ambassador. The announcement was made during a press conference on March 12th, 2025, at the Ivy Dumont Building.
Ferguson-McKenzie will serve in this role for a twelve-month term effective March 2nd, 2026. Her appointment supports a coordinated national effort to promote healthy lifestyles, nutrition literacy, and positive performance habits among primary and secondary school students throughout The Bahamas.
Education Minister Glenys Hanna Martin said the initiative “was a long time coming.” She as well as Health and Wellness Minister Dr. Michael Darville expressed their excitement for the venture which aims to strengthen students’ understanding of the relationship between nutrition, physical activity, discipline, and long-term health outcomes, while encouraging positive lifestyle behaviours from an early age.
Ferguson-McKenzie said she’s ready for the challenge to ensure our youth are motivated to develop and maintain healthy lifestyles.
