SALZBURG, Austria – Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) successfully retained the UEFA Super Cup after defeating Aston Villa 2-1 in an entertaining contest at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg on Wednesday night.
The UEFA Champions League holders took the lead in the 20th minute through Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who cut inside from the left before firing past goalkeeper Marco Bizot.
Aston Villa responded with determination, and 17-year-old Brian Madjo announced himself on the big stage by scoring on his professional debut just before half-time. The teenager shrugged off PSG defender Willian Pacho before volleying home the equaliser, becoming the youngest goalscorer in UEFA Super Cup history.
Madjo could have added to his tally after creating several chances, but the young forward narrowly missed on multiple occasions as Villa grew into the contest.
PSG restored their advantage in the 62nd minute when Desire Doue raced behind the Villa defence and calmly slotted home what proved to be the winning goal.
Villa nearly found another equaliser moments later, but PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov produced an excellent save to deny 19-year-old George Hemmings.
The victory handed PSG their first trophy of the 2026/27 season and reinforced their dominance in European football under manager Luis Enrique.
Despite the defeat, Aston Villa manager Unai Emery praised his players, particularly the performances of youngsters Brian Madjo and George Hemmings.
> “With a loss, you can never feel happy, but how we competed and how the players responded for 90 minutes makes us very proud,” Emery said.
Villa were without several key players, including Ollie Watkins, Ezri Konsa and Emiliano Martinez, who are still on extended post-World Cup breaks. However, the impressive displays of Madjo and Hemmings provided optimism for the Premier League side ahead of the new campaign.
The match also revived memories of the thrilling Champions League encounter between both clubs in 2025, with PSG once again emerging victorious in another entertaining European clash.
