Malawi have made history by reaching their first-ever Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final after defeating Algeria 3-1 in the semi-final in Rabat, Morocco. The victory also secured Malawi’s qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Tabitha Chawinga opened the scoring in the 33rd minute with a spectacular overhead kick before her sister, Temwa Chawinga, doubled Malawi’s advantage in first-half stoppage time. Both sisters played a major role in Malawi’s historic run.
The match became even more dramatic when both teams were reduced to 10 players. Algeria’s Morgane Belkhiter was sent off for denying a clear scoring opportunity, while Malawi’s Rose Kadzere later received a red card for a dangerous tackle.
Algeria pulled one goal back through Ikram Adjabi in the 60th minute, but Tabitha Chawinga restored Malawi’s two-goal lead in the 76th minute with a solo effort to seal the victory.
Malawi will now play Cameroon in Sunday’s final as they chase their first major continental title. The Chawinga sisters have been among the standout players of the tournament, with Temwa scoring five goals and Tabitha four so far.
