Manchester City have completed the signing of Argentina international Enzo Fernández from Chelsea in a £125 million deal, making the midfielder the joint-most expensive player in British football history. Fernández has signed a five-year contract with City that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2031.
The 25-year-old midfielder joins City after three-and-a-half years at Chelsea, having arrived from Benfica for about £107 million in January 2023. During his time at Stamford Bridge, Fernández made 170 appearances, scored 31 goals and helped the club win the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup.
Fernández’s move was completed on transfer deadline day after weeks of negotiations between the two Premier League clubs. The Argentina international had made it clear that he wanted to leave Chelsea and reunite with Enzo Maresca, who previously worked with him at Stamford Bridge and is now Manchester City’s manager.
The transfer matches the British record fee Liverpool paid Newcastle United for Alexander Isak last year. Fernández arrives at City following an impressive 2025/26 campaign in which he scored 15 goals and provided seven assists in 54 appearances for Chelsea, while also helping Argentina reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
City believe Fernández’s technical ability, passing range, work rate and goalscoring threat will strengthen their midfield as they seek to challenge for major honours. The Argentine, who won the 2022 World Cup and 2024 Copa América with his country, said he was delighted to join City and ready to help the club continue winning trophies.
