AltSchool Africa, a leading Nigerian edtech startup, has introduced an ambitious initiative aimed at providing AI education to millions across the continent. Dubbed “AI for 10M Africans,” the program is designed to equip learners at various stages with the knowledge and skills to harness artificial intelligence.
Speaking at a media briefing, Adewale Yusuf, CEO of AltSchool Africa, emphasized the need for Africa to actively participate in the AI revolution. He described the initiative as a transformative movement, stating, “This is more than just an educational program; it is about closing the knowledge gap and creating opportunities for Africans to thrive in the AI-driven future.”
The initiative will offer a structured learning path, beginning with foundational courses to introduce AI concepts and debunk common misconceptions. These will be followed by technical-level courses covering machine learning, data science, and AI engineering, which will be available at a fee.
Recognizing the importance of accessibility, AltSchool plans to collaborate with governments, organizations, and industry leaders to ensure the program reaches a broad audience. Yusuf stressed the necessity of integrating AI into African school curriculums, saying, “The world is evolving rapidly, and Africa cannot afford to be left behind.”
Adding to this vision, Foluso Folorunso, Senior Product Designer at AltSchool, highlighted the need for Africa to move beyond being just a consumer of AI products. “AI is revolutionizing industries globally, but Africa remains underrepresented. This initiative aims to change that narrative.”
To ensure inclusivity, AltSchool will offer courses in multiple languages, including Swahili, French, Portuguese, Arabic, and Hausa, making AI education accessible across diverse regions.
In addition to the online program, the startup is introducing a hybrid learning model through its new project, “Campus by AltSchool.” This initiative, set to launch in Q2 2025, will provide physical learning spaces in Lagos and Kigali to enhance course completion rates and foster an immersive learning experience.
To further drive participation, AltSchool is securing scholarship partnerships with organizations such as Binance and Bybit, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder access to AI education.
This bold move by AltSchool is a step toward positioning Africa as a key player in the global AI landscape, empowering individuals with the tools needed to drive technological innovation and economic growth.
