The Eastern Cape education department has deregistered an independent school in the Alfred Nzo West education district due to its handling of a rape case involving a 7-year-old pupil.
Education MEC Fundile Gade announced the decision after the school’s principal failed to cooperate with the police investigation, raising concerns about pupil safety.
“[The principal] refused to undergo DNA testing and hired private lawyers to defend him on a matter he cannot explain. If you are innocent, why not take the test to clear your name? Instead, you are being defensive without cause,” Gade stated.
The incident occurred in October, and the case remains unresolved.
Principal’s Actions Spark Outrage
Earlier this week, the victim’s mother shared on Facebook that the principal had sent a transfer letter and report card for her child without any request.
“The parent has not formally requested a transfer letter, but in light of the events, the school would like to offer one,” the principal wrote.
Gade emphasized that the department’s priority is ensuring the safety and well-being of all pupils.
“My concern is not only for the child who was raped but also for protecting all children in the school. If another child is harmed tomorrow, what would I say?”
Immediate Action and Legal Consequences
The deregistration process has commenced, with the school given 24 hours to respond.
“As the one who issues school licenses, I have decided to revoke their license and government funding,” Gade said. “They may choose to go to court, but they will find me there first.”
The department has assured that affected pupils will be placed in alternative schools within the district.
