The Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has announced the appointment of Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Anyaehie as its 8th substantive Vice-Chancellor.
The announcement was made on Sunday in Abuja by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr. Olugbenga Kukoyi, who described the selection process as rigorous, merit-based, and transparent.
“I am pleased to announce Professor Ugochukwu Bond Anyaehie as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University after a thorough and transparent process,” Kukoyi stated.
A Distinguished Scholar and Administrator
Prof. Anyaehie, an expert in Medical Physiology and Clinical Measurement, has nearly two decades of teaching experience at the College of Medicine, University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus (UNEC).
He earned his MBBS in 1998 from Abia State University, followed by a Master’s degree (2004), PhD (2009), and a Master of Public Health (2011).
Born on November 16, 1971, he rose to the rank of professor more than 12 years ago, achieving full professorship at age 41. Over the years, he has served in significant academic and administrative roles, including:
Member, Governing Council of two universities
Member, University of Nigeria Senate (over a decade)
Head of Department (multiple terms)
Director of Research and Publications
Immediate past Deputy Provost, College of Medicine, UNEC
He has supervised over 40 postgraduate students, four of whom are now professors, and has served as an external examiner to various medical schools and the West African Postgraduate Medical College.
Broad National and International Experience
Prof. Anyaehie’s career extends beyond Nigerian academia. He was the pioneer Provost of the College of Medicine at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, and has served as a Visiting Scholar at:
Medical University of Graz, Austria
Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium
He has delivered the 141st Inaugural Lecture of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and has published over 50 peer-reviewed scientific papers.
His expertise has also been tapped by international donor agencies, government bodies, and the Nigerian National Assembly, where he has contributed to health development, policy formulation, and strategic planning.
