The University of Ibadan (UI) has reclaimed its position as Nigeria’s best university in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026, moving from fourth place in 2025 to the top of the national chart once again.
According to the ranking released on Thursday, UI is placed between 801–1000 globally, ahead of other leading Nigerian institutions. The University of Lagos (UNILAG) also ranked in the same global band, making both universities Nigeria’s only entrants in the world’s top 1,000 institutions.
The Times Higher Education (THE) ranking assessed 2,191 universities from 115 countries, using 18 performance indicators across five key areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement, and international outlook.

What It Means for Nigeria’s Higher Education
The 2026 ranking reflects steady improvement in Nigeria’s research visibility and international recognition, although challenges remain in funding, innovation, and global collaboration.
Education analysts note that the success of UI and UNILAG shows the potential of public universities when supported with adequate research funding and academic freedom. The strong performance of Covenant and Landmark Universities also highlights the growing contribution of private institutions to tertiary education quality.
Experts recommend greater investment in research infrastructure, faculty development, and cross-border academic partnerships to help more Nigerian universities break into the top 500 by the end of the decade.
