The University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo, awarded degrees to 634 students at its sixth convocation ceremony, with 34 earning first-class honors, according to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Adesegun Fatusi.
Fatusi disclosed that 539 of the graduates were undergraduates, while 95 were postgraduates. Among the undergraduates, 34 achieved first-class grades, 223 earned second-class upper, 145 second-class lower, 9 third-class, and 127 received unclassified degrees. The unclassified category included 41 medical doctors, 23 dental surgeons, and 64 physiotherapists.
For postgraduate degrees, the institution graduated 36 with postgraduate diplomas, 19 with Master of Public Health degrees, 38 with MSc degrees, 2 with MPhil degrees, and 1 with a PhD.
Highlighting UNIMED’s impact in its 10 years of existence, Fatusi noted the institution’s significant contributions to Nigeria’s healthcare and education sectors. “UNIMED has produced medical doctors, dentists, nurses, physiotherapists, and other health science professionals, marking a remarkable achievement in the country’s history,” he said.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the university’s Visitor, commended UNIMED’s achievements, noting his administration’s N1 billion contribution toward the university’s senate building. He praised the institution’s record of 100% success in professional examinations across various health disciplines.
In a special recognition, former Ondo State Governor Dr. Olusegun Mimiko was awarded the best graduating Master’s student for 2024. Mimiko, a graduate of the Master of Health Law and Policy program, received the “Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu prize” for his outstanding performance.
