The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa Chapter, has joined the ongoing two-week nationwide warning strike declared by the union’s national leadership.
Confirming the development in Okitipupa on Monday, the Chairman of the OAUSTECH ASUU branch, Dr. Oluwatoyin Ogunbamike, said the chapter had complied fully with the directive issued by the national body.
“Yes, we have joined the two-week nationwide strike declared by the national body of ASUU,” he told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). “We are obliged to comply with the directive in the collective interest of all members across the country.”
The warning strike, which began at midnight on Monday, October 13, is part of ASUU’s efforts to pressure the Federal Government to address long-standing issues affecting public universities.
In a statement on Sunday, ASUU National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, announced that the strike action was approved at the union’s recent National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja.
> “The warning strike shall be total and comprehensive. All ASUU branches in public universities are hereby directed to withdraw their services for an initial period of two weeks,” Piwuna said.
While the strike takes effect immediately, academic activities at OAUSTECH are not expected to be significantly disrupted, as students are still on vacation and have not resumed for the 2025/2026 academic session.
ASUU has consistently accused the Federal Government of failing to implement key agreements, including those related to improved university funding, staff welfare, and institutional autonomy. The union maintains that the ongoing industrial action is necessary to compel the government to fulfill its obligations.
