The police in Abuja have confirmed a bomb explosion at Tsangagyar Sani Uthman Islamiyya School in Kuchibuyi Village, Kubwa, which resulted in two fatalities and left two others injured.
According to reports, the explosion occurred at approximately 11:00 AM on Monday, shocking the local community.
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, stated that law enforcement officials responded swiftly following a distress call from the Sarki of Kuchibuyi. A team, including the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, was promptly dispatched to the scene.
“The area was immediately cordoned off to ensure the safety of residents and facilitate a thorough investigation,” Adeh said. “Victims were quickly evacuated and transported to the hospital for medical attention.”
Preliminary investigations reveal that three men, suspected to be from Katsina, visited the school’s proprietor, Mallam Adamu Ashimu, before the explosion. It is believed that the men brought an improvised explosive device (IED) to the premises.
“Tragically, two of the suspects died while tampering with the device on the school’s veranda,” Adeh explained. “The third suspect, along with a female trader, sustained severe injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment under police guard.”
The FCT Bomb Squad confirmed that the explosion was caused by an IED, with remnants of the device recovered at the scene.
As part of the ongoing investigation, Mallam Adamu Ashimu has been taken into custody for questioning. The police are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
“The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, encourages residents to report any unusual behaviour or items resembling improvised explosive devices to the police via emergency numbers,” Adeh said.
Adeh also provided safety advice: “Avoid touching suspicious objects. Report them immediately to the police. Keep emergency contact numbers accessible and work collaboratively with neighbours to maintain a safe community.”
The investigation continues as the police work to ensure the safety of residents and uncover the full details surrounding the incident.
