The University of Jos (UNIJOS) has earned a place among Nigeria’s top 10 universities in the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, marking a major milestone in its journey toward academic excellence and global recognition.
According to the latest ranking released by Times Higher Education, UNIJOS is placed within the global 1201–1500 band, joining other leading Nigerian institutions such as Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMinna), and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).
This year’s global assessment reviewed 2,191 universities across 115 countries, evaluating them based on 18 performance indicators spanning teaching quality, research strength, research environment, industry engagement, and international outlook. The analysis included data from 174.9 million citations across 18.7 million research publications, as well as responses from more than 108,000 academics worldwide.
In Nigeria, 51 universities made it to the global ranking list. Nine institutions, including UNIJOS, were placed in the top categories, while 14 appeared in the 1501+ group, and 27 were unranked. This growing presence, analysts say, reflects Nigeria’s increasing visibility in the global higher education landscape.
Sharing the same 1201–1500 ranking band with UNIJOS are globally respected institutions such as Canterbury Christ Church University (UK), Oakland University (USA), Brock University (Canada), Changzhou University (China), Ankara University (Turkey), Aichi Medical University (Japan), and Nelson Mandela University (South Africa).
Reacting to the news, Professor Tanko Ishaya, Vice-Chancellor of UNIJOS, described the recognition as a validation of his administration’s commitment to raising the university’s international profile.
> “When I assumed office, I made a promise to enhance the University’s global standing,” Professor Ishaya said. “Seeing this vision come to life is a proud moment for all of us. This achievement underscores our dedication to academic excellence and impactful research.”
He credited the success to the collective efforts of the university’s faculty, researchers, administrative staff, and students, whose commitment to innovation and academic quality continues to strengthen UNIJOS’s reputation.
Professor Ishaya added that the ranking would inspire the institution to deepen its focus on international collaboration, research output, and student-centered innovation.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings are widely regarded as one of the most credible global assessments of university performance. To qualify, institutions must produce at least 1,000 research publications within a five-year period (2020–2024) and demonstrate measurable impact across research, teaching, and global engagement.
