The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, has announced that over 10,000 athletes from 22 universities will participate in the forthcoming National Universities Games Association (NUGA) competition, scheduled to hold in Jos, Plateau State, from November 6 to 16.
Prof. Ishaya made this known during a road walk in Jos on Tuesday, organised to raise awareness ahead of the Games. He said the university was fully prepared to host one of the best editions in history.
“We are ready to deliver a memorable and exceptional NUGA Games. This road show is to tell the world that Jos is open, peaceful, and prepared to welcome everyone,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor appreciated the Federal Government, the National Sports Commission, and the Ministry of Education for their support. He also commended President Bola Tinubu for promoting sports and thanked Governor Caleb Mutfwang for backing the university’s efforts.
“The state government’s support has been tremendous because hosting over 10,000 visitors will greatly boost the local economy,” Ishaya added.
Chairman of the Media and Publicity Sub-Committee, Taye Obateru, said the Games would showcase the peace, hospitality, and vibrancy of Plateau State, while also helping to discover and develop young sports talents.
Similarly, the Global President of the UNIJOS Alumni Association, Peter Gad, said the event would change negative perceptions about the state and drive both infrastructural and social development.
“The Games will not only showcase the potential of Nigerian youths but also project Jos as a centre of peace and unity,” Gad said.
