Students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, have raised alarm over sharp increases in rents charged by private hostel operators on the main campus.
Findings revealed that some hostel owners have raised fees by nearly 40 per cent. A hostel that cost ₦500,000 per session last year is now going for ₦710,000, while a single room is being priced at ₦950,000.
Private hostels became the main option for many students last session after renovation work on official hostels by the Federal Government forced the school to adopt online learning for one semester. Students only returned physically to campus in batches to write examinations.
When contacted, UNILAG’s Head of Communication Unit, Adejoke Ibraheem, asked that enquiries be directed to the official email address of the unit for a formal response.
It was further gathered that since the new academic session is yet to commence, the university has not announced new charges for its official hostels.
