Nigeria’s education sector is gearing up for a historic moment as stakeholders prepare to host 60,000 teachers at the “Let There Be Teachers” Conference, scheduled for Saturday, September 20, 2025, at the Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos.
Organisers say the event is designed not only to celebrate and empower teachers but also to set a Guinness World Record for the largest teachers’ gathering in history.
The General Secretary of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, Mr. Luyi Armstrong, revealed that the strategic meeting held in Lagos brought together the Nigeria Union of Teachers and other major education stakeholders to fine-tune logistics for the landmark event.
“This will be the first time in Nigeria’s history that teachers will come together on such a scale to discuss their challenges and celebrate their profession. We are excited to make history by attempting a Guinness World Record,” Armstrong said.
Spotlight on Teachers’ Role
The convener of the conference, education advocate Oluwaseyi Anifowose, described the mobilisation as a bold statement in support of teachers.
“The growth of schools is directly tied to the growth of teachers. When we empower educators, we secure the future of education in Nigeria,” Anifowose noted.
Also speaking, co-founder of 1 Million Teachers, Dr. Hakeem Subair, called for increased recognition of teachers’ impact on society.
“It is time to pay closer attention to teachers’ issues. Teachers are central to national development and harmony,” he said.
Education Experts to Lead Conversations
The planning session featured insights from leading education experts such as Ronke Posh Adeniyi, Rizma Butt, Rotimi Eyitayo, Rhoda Odigboh, and Prof. Akin Akinpelu, who highlighted strategies for innovation, leadership, and sustainability in schools.
A Turning Point for Education
For decades, Nigeria’s education system has been burdened by underfunding, poor remuneration, inadequate infrastructure, and limited professional development opportunities for teachers. Organisers say the conference will confront these issues head-on while spotlighting solutions to learning poverty and promoting technology-driven teaching methods.
If successful, the “Let There Be Teachers” Conference will not only strengthen partnerships across states but also place Nigeria in the Guinness World Records as home to the largest-ever teachers’ gathering.
