French came to me as a gift from above. I stumbled on French and fell in love. This passion, ignited by circumstances that could have left me without this beautiful linguistic adventure, has shaped not only my life but also the lives of countless young learners around the world. As I sit here today, I can’t help but reflect on the journey that led me to create “The Chatroom,” a revolutionary online platform for children to speak and practice their French language skills with native speakers.
My relationship with the French language began as a mere dream during my formative years. I didn’t have the opportunity to study French in my primary school, nor did it make its way into the curriculum of my first secondary school. The green-eyed monster of envy overcame me as I watched my brother and sister delve into the world of French, while I languished in linguistic stagnation. It was this yearning that drove me to make a bold move, changing schools in pursuit of a chance to learn French. However, the missed classes had already stacked the odds against me.
Life, as it often does, granted me a second chance. In 1993, I embarked on the journey to take the Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE). It was a year marked by the upheavals surrounding MKO Abiola and the subsequent closure of universities. Faced with boredom and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, I decided to enroll in Alliance Française Lagos, a pivotal decision that would forever alter the course of my life. My tutor recognized my natural talent for the French language and encouraged me to pursue higher education in France.
To all parents out there, let this be a testament that it is possible to study French to a level where you can gain admission to a French university. This was my personal odyssey. My journey as a student in France spanned from October 1994 to April 1997 and was not without its share of challenges. Yet, one thing remained unequivocally clear to me: I was on the path to my future.
Fast forward to 2003, in the bustling metropolis of London, England. I embarked on my entrepreneurial journey by establishing MYL French, an after-school program for primary school children. Little did I know that this would be the seed that would eventually grow into an international brand.
The Birth of MYL French
MYL French was born out of a desire to share my passion for the French language with the younger generation. As an educator, I believed that the key to language fluency lay in immersion and conversation. The after-school program became an instant success. Children, with their boundless enthusiasm, embraced the opportunity to explore the world of French through games, songs, and engaging lessons. It was in these early days that I witnessed the transformative power of language education.
Over the years, MYL French expanded its reach, offering a comprehensive curriculum and attracting dedicated teachers who shared my vision. Our programs not only taught children the French language but also imparted a deep appreciation for the culture and heritage of Francophone nations.
