The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has hosted the unveiling of the Étude Mobile Application, an educational technology platform developed by WalterSam Global Technologies Ltd, at the Bank of Industry (BOI)-UNILAG Incubation and Co-Working Hub.
The launch, held on Friday, September 18, 2026, at the Entrepreneurship and Skills Development Centre (ESDC), highlighted the transformation of a student innovation idea into a fully developed digital product and underscored the university’s growing role in entrepreneurship, technology and innovation.
Étude is designed to expand access to quality learning through engaging and curriculum-aligned digital learning experiences.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Education, Dr. Moruf Tunji Alausa, represented by his Senior Special Assistant, Mr. Adebayo Onigbanjo, said the initiative reflected the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting youth-driven innovation under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Onigbanjo noted that Samuel Olamilekan Johnson, the founder of the platform and a UNILAG graduate, first gained wider recognition through the Federal Government’s youth entrepreneurship support programme launched in 2025.
According to him, the launch represented both a milestone for UNILAG and a demonstration of the impact government-backed innovation programmes can have on young entrepreneurs.
Representing the Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), Prof. Foluso Afolabi Lesi, said technology is reshaping how people learn, communicate and access information.
“Reimagining education is not about replacing the classroom with technology. Rather, it’s about expanding what the classroom can become, creating learning experiences that are more accessible, engaging and responsive to the diverse needs of today’s learners,” he said.
Lesi added that the university remains committed to creating opportunities where knowledge is applied to solving real-world problems and equipping graduates with practical skills beyond academic qualifications.
Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Chief Idris Olorunnibe, who delivered a keynote address on technology and entrepreneurship, stressed the importance of digital infrastructure in supporting youth-led innovation and sustainable business growth.
He also reflected on Johnson’s entrepreneurial journey, describing it as an example of what can be achieved when young innovators are connected to mentorship, infrastructure and opportunities.
Olorunnibe noted that Johnson recently became the first postgraduate recipient of the Federal Government’s ₦50 million equity-free Student Venture Capital Grant.
Chairman of the International School Lagos Board and Professor of Marketing at UNILAG, Prof. Bola Dixon-Ogbechie, spoke on the need to bridge generational gaps in education by combining the experience of educators with the technological capabilities of younger generations.
The event also featured the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, who reflected on the evolution of education and the importance of sustaining innovation ecosystems within universities.
Ogundipe’s participation highlighted the origins of the Étude project, which first emerged as the winning idea at the maiden edition of the UNILAG Business Innovation Competition in 2021 during his tenure as Vice-Chancellor.
