President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday met with the Chairman of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Jim Ovia, and the Fund’s Managing Director, Dr. Akintunde Sawyerr, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, to review the progress of the student loan scheme and discuss its future.
The meeting focused on the journey of the initiative since its launch, assessing how far the Fund has come in expanding access to higher education for Nigerian students.
Discussions also centred on the impact of the student loan programme on students and their families, with participants reviewing how the intervention has eased the financial burden of tertiary education and enabled more young Nigerians to remain in school.
The President and NELFUND leadership also examined the challenges facing the implementation of the scheme, including operational and funding concerns, as part of efforts to strengthen the programme.
They further explored opportunities to expand the Fund’s reach, improve service delivery and ensure that more eligible students benefit from the initiative.
A key aspect of the meeting was the long-term sustainability of NELFUND, with discussions on strategies to maintain the Fund’s financial viability and ensure it continues to support future generations of Nigerian students.
The meeting comes as the Federal Government continues to deepen reforms aimed at improving access to affordable higher education through the student loan scheme.
