The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) has a new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of its Governing Council.
The Federal Government recently appointed Dr. Olugbenga A. Awe, a United States-based academic and physician, to the position.
Here are five key things to know about him and his new role at the university.
1. He Is a University of Lagos Graduate
Dr. Awe began his academic journey at the University of Lagos before pursuing advanced postgraduate training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Internal Medicine.
His educational background combines medical training with extensive experience in higher education.
2. He Is Based in the United States
Awe currently serves as an Associate Professor of Medicine at Mercer University School of Medicine in the United States.
His appointment brings international academic and professional experience to FUTA’s Governing Council.
3. He Is More Than a Medical Doctor
Beyond medicine, Awe is also recognised as an academic, entrepreneur, education administrator and public servant.
According to the statement announcing his appointment, his career spans healthcare, higher education, enterprise and public service.
4. He Replaces Senator Nora Daduut
Awe succeeds Senator Nora Ladi Daduut as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council.
Daduut recently left the position following her appointment as Nigeria’s ambassador to South Korea.
5. He Will Chair FUTA’s Governing Council
As Pro-Chancellor, Awe will serve as Chairman of the University’s Governing Council.
While the Vice-Chancellor manages the university’s daily operations, the Governing Council provides oversight on major policies, strategic planning, governance and institutional development.
6. His Appointment Took Effect in July 2026
According to the appointment letter signed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, Awe’s appointment took effect on July 29, 2026.
The letter conveying the appointment was dated July 30, 2026.
7. He Is Expected to Support FUTA’s Growth
The Federal Government said Awe’s appointment is expected to strengthen sound governance and promote academic excellence, innovation, institutional transformation and national development.
As one of Nigeria’s leading technology-focused universities, FUTA’s future direction will partly be shaped by decisions taken at the Governing Council level under his leadership.
