Lionel Messi’s Remarkable Argentina Career: From His Debut to World Cup Glory

Lionel Messi’s international football career is officially over

After more than two decades of wearing the Argentina shirt, the legendary forward announced his retirement from international football on August 31, 2026, bringing an extraordinary 21-year journey with the national team to an end.

Messi leaves international football with 207 senior appearances and 125 goals for Argentina, records that make him the country’s most-capped player and all-time leading scorer.

But the numbers only tell part of the story.

From his early success at youth level to Olympic glory, painful defeats in major finals and, ultimately, World Cup triumph, Messi’s Argentina career produced some of the most memorable moments in international football.

From a 47-second debut to Argentina legend

Messi’s Argentina senior career began in dramatic fashion.

He made his senior international debut against Hungary on August 17, 2005, but his first appearance lasted only 47 seconds after he was sent off shortly after coming on.

That difficult beginning was followed by a remarkable rise.

Before becoming the central figure of Argentina’s senior team, Messi had already established himself as one of the world’s brightest young talents. In 2005, he helped Argentina win the FIFA U-20 World Cup, scoring six goals and winning both the Golden Ball and Golden Boot.

Three years later, he added an Olympic gold medal to his international honours. Messi was part of Argentina’s victorious football team at the Beijing 2008 Olympics, where Argentina defeated Nigeria 1–0 in the final, with Messi providing the assist for Ángel Di María’s winning goal.

Six World Cups and three finals

Messi went on to represent Argentina at an unprecedented six FIFA World Cups.

His World Cup appearances came in 2006 in Germany, 2010 in South Africa, 2014 in Brazil, 2018 in Russia, 2022 in Qatar and 2026 in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Across those six tournaments, he played in three finals.

The first came in 2014, when Argentina reached the final in Brazil but lost 1–0 to Germany after extra time.

Eight years later, Messi finally achieved the biggest prize in international football.

At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, he captained Argentina to victory over France in one of the most dramatic finals in World Cup history. The match ended 3–3 after extra time before Argentina won on penalties.

Messi was also named the tournament’s best player, earning the World Cup Golden Ball.

He had already won the same award in 2014, making him the first and only player to win the World Cup Golden Ball twice.

Messi returned for a sixth World Cup in 2026 and once again helped Argentina reach the final. However, Spain defeated Argentina 1–0, leaving Messi with one World Cup title and two runner-up finishes.

He ended his World Cup career with 21 goals. Although that figure makes him one of the competition’s greatest scorers, he does not hold the all-time record, with Kylian Mbappé finishing the 2026 tournament on 22 goals.

Messi also scored eight goals during Argentina’s 2026 World Cup campaign.

The trophies that changed his Argentina story

For many years, Messi’s international career was defined as much by disappointment as achievement.

Argentina lost the 2014 World Cup final and subsequently suffered further heartbreak in major international finals.

In 2016, after Argentina lost the Copa América Centenario final to Chile, Messi announced his retirement from international football. He later reversed that decision and returned to the national team.

The breakthrough finally came in 2021.

Messi won his first major senior international trophy when Argentina defeated Brazil 1–0 in the Copa América final at the Maracanã Stadium.

That victory opened the door to one of the most successful periods in Argentina’s modern football history.

In 2022, Argentina defeated Italy in the Finalissima at Wembley Stadium, giving Messi another international trophy.

Later that year came the World Cup triumph in Qatar.

Argentina then won the 2024 Copa América, giving Messi two Copa América titles with the senior national team.

Argentina’s record-breaking goalscorer

Beyond the trophies, Messi leaves behind a collection of national-team records that may stand for years.

His 207 senior appearances make him Argentina’s most-capped player, while his 125 goals make him the country’s all-time leading scorer.

He is also Argentina’s leading World Cup goalscorer, with 21 goals across his six appearances at the tournament.

His longevity has also allowed him to establish himself as Argentina’s leading scorer in World Cup qualifying.

Messi holds Argentina’s international hat-trick record and produced some extraordinary scoring seasons for the national team.

In 2022 alone, he scored 18 goals for Argentina, making it his most prolific calendar year at international level.

His first World Cup goal came at the 2006 tournament in Germany, when he scored against Serbia and Montenegro during Argentina’s 6–0 victory.

A career of milestones

Messi’s Argentina career was filled with milestones beyond his major trophies.

He went from being a teenager who was sent off within seconds of his senior debut to becoming the leader of a generation of Argentine players.

He experienced the disappointment of losing major finals, stepped away from international football and returned before eventually delivering the trophies Argentina had been waiting for.

His international career also included six World Cup tournaments, three World Cup finals, one World Cup title, two Copa América championships, a Finalissima title, Olympic gold and a FIFA U-20 World Cup.

At the 2005 U-20 World Cup, he was named both the tournament’s best player and top scorer after scoring six goals.

At senior level, his most significant individual World Cup achievement came in 2022, when he became the first player to win the Golden Ball twice.

Messi’s final Argentina record

By the time he announced his retirement, Messi had accumulated:

– 207 senior appearances
– 125 senior international goals
– Six World Cup appearances
– Three World Cup finals
– One FIFA World Cup title
– Two Copa América titles
– One Finalissima title
– One Olympic gold medal
– One FIFA U-20 World Cup title
– One U-20 World Cup Golden Ball
– One U-20 World Cup Golden Boot
– Two World Cup Golden Balls
– 21 World Cup goals
– Two World Cup runner-up finishes

Messi’s Argentina story therefore stretches far beyond the statistics.

It began with a teenager being sent off just 47 seconds into his senior debut and ended with that same player leaving the national team as its most-capped footballer and all-time leading scorer.

Between those two moments were years of criticism, heartbreaking defeats, an international retirement and comeback, historic trophies and a World Cup triumph that completed one of football’s greatest unfinished stories.

For Argentina, the Messi era has officially come to an end.

But his records, trophies and legacy with the national team will remain long after his final appearance.
