The Owners of Private Schools Association of Nigeria has called on the Federal Government to suspend the ongoing admission process for the 2026/2027 academic session until all outstanding O’Level examination results are released.
The association made the call in a statement signed by its National President, Prof Uzochukwu Nwanonyuo, following a stakeholders’ meeting on Tuesday.
According to the association, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has commenced the admission process based on available WAEC results, despite the fact that results from other examination bodies are still being awaited.
OPSAN said some candidates who sat for the 2025/2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination were yet to receive their results in some public, mission and private secondary schools.
The association also raised concerns over the non-release of results by the National Examinations Council and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board, noting that some universities had already commenced or concluded their Post-UTME and admission processes.
“Therefore, as a body, we call on the Federal Government to immediately halt the ongoing admission process for the 2026/2027 academic session pending the release of all O’Level results,” the association said.
Nwanonyuo said many prospective university students depend on WAEC and NECO results for admission, while candidates from technical colleges, federal science and technical colleges, vocational schools and commercial schools may depend on NECO and NABTEB results.
He argued that continuing the admission process before the release of all relevant results could prevent some candidates from participating fully in the admission exercise.
“This is not proper and not justified. Some Federal Universities have already concluded admissions for professional courses while students waiting for NECO and NABTEB have not even had a chance,” he said.
The association appealed to the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Alausa, to intervene and direct JAMB to suspend the admission process until the outstanding examination results are available.
OPSAN also called on the National Universities Commission to direct universities across the country to suspend Post-UTME and admission processes until all O’Level results are released.
In addition, the association urged WAEC to publish a comprehensive list of candidates who sat for the 2025/2026 internal examinations, while calling on NECO and NABTEB to expedite the release of their results.
OPSAN argued that admitting students based largely on WAEC results while candidates awaiting NECO and NABTEB results remain excluded could disadvantage a section of prospective students.
“JAMB granting admission without waiting for NECO and NABTEB is a slap on our national examination bodies. Nigeria at this stage of development should be strengthening NECO and NABTEB, not indirectly making WAEC the only yardstick for UTME admissions,” the association said.
The group maintained that all O’Level results should be available before university admissions begin, saying this would allow candidates from different examination backgrounds to compete on equal terms.
