The Lions International Lagos, Ikoyi Club, District 404-A3 Nigeria, has rebuilt and inaugurated 11 toilet facilities at Tinubu Methodist Primary School on Lagos Island.
The facilities, which were commissioned on Tuesday, are located at the school on Bank Anthony Street, Lagos Island. The project was undertaken as part of the club’s efforts to improve sanitation and create a healthier learning environment for pupils.
Speaking at the inauguration, the District Convener, Elder Johnson Efunkomaya, represented by the Vice District Governor, Oladele Lamidi, said the new facilities would contribute to providing a more decent environment for the pupils.
Lamidi commended the Ikoyi Lions Club for executing the project and urged the pupils to use the facilities responsibly and ensure that they remained clean.
A representative of the Lagos Island Local Government Council, Oladumoye Tomi, also praised the initiative, describing it as an important contribution to the welfare of the pupils.
Tomi said the local government and Lagos State Government appreciated the Lions Club for intervening in an area that directly affects the health and wellbeing of schoolchildren.
The Immediate Past President of the Lions Club Ikoyi and project coordinator, Mrs Pat Jinadu, said the project was motivated by the club’s commitment to community service and the poor condition of the school’s existing toilet facilities.
Jinadu explained that the facilities were not simply renovated but rebuilt from scratch because the previous toilets were severely dilapidated. She added that the surrounding environment also required cleaning before construction work began.
According to her, funds for the project were raised through contributions from friends and family, with some individuals making significant donations towards the initiative.
She said non-governmental organisations also had a role to play in complementing government efforts to provide essential facilities in public schools.
The pupils of Tinubu Methodist Primary School expressed their appreciation by presenting songs during the ceremony.
Other dignitaries at the event, including Mrs Moji Sofowore and Bola Abioye, described the project as an investment in the future of the pupils.
Abioye stressed the importance of maintaining a clean school environment, noting that poor sanitation could expose children to illnesses and other health risks.
The First Vice-President of the Ikoyi Lions Club, Afolabi Balogun, also emphasised the importance of proper sanitation and the role of functional toilet facilities in preventing disease.
The Head Teacher of the school, Sanusi Shadiat, gave the vote of thanks and appreciated the Lions Club for supporting the school with the new facilities.
