Nigeria’s independence on 1 October 1960 was not an overnight achievement but the outcome of decades of agitation, reforms, and constitutional changes. From early resistance to colonial policies to the historic independence motion, each stage brought the country closer to self-government.

1. The Clifford Constitution (1922)

Introduced limited elections, allowing Nigerians to elect representatives for the first time.

Led to the formation of Nigeria’s first political party, the Nigerian National Democratic Party (NNDP), founded by Herbert Macaulay.

Marked the beginning of modern political consciousness in Nigeria.

2. The Rise of Nationalist Movements (1930s–1940s)

Newspapers such as the West African Pilot (founded by Nnamdi Azikiwe) and organisations like the Nigerian Youth Movement (NYM) spread nationalist ideas.

Trade unions organised strikes, especially during the Second World War, linking economic struggles with political freedom.

3. The Richards Constitution (1946)

Intended to unify Nigeria but provided only limited political participation for Nigerians.

Divided the country into three regions (North, West, East), deepening regionalism.

Widely criticised by nationalists as inadequate.

4. The Macpherson Constitution (1951)

A turning point: allowed greater Nigerian representation in government.

Established regional legislatures in the North, West, and East.

Strengthened political parties such as the NCNC (led by Nnamdi Azikiwe), the Action Group (led by Obafemi Awolowo), and the NPC (led by Ahmadu Bello and Tafawa Balewa).

5. The Motion for Independence (1953)

Chief Anthony Enahoro, then aged 29, moved the first motion for Nigeria’s independence in the House of Representatives.

Though initially rejected due to regional disagreements, it sparked nationwide debates and disturbances, including the Kano riots.

This convinced Britain that independence could not be delayed indefinitely.

6. The Lyttleton Constitution (1954)

Granted greater autonomy to the regions and formally introduced a federal system of government.

Laid the foundation for Nigeria’s eventual federal republic.

7. Self-Government in the Regions (1957–1959)

1957: The Western Region and the Eastern Region attained self-government.

1959: The Northern Region attained self-government.

These milestones demonstrated that Nigeria was ready for full independence.

8. Nigeria’s Independence (1 October 1960)

Nigeria became an independent nation with Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa as its first Prime Minister.

In 1963, Nigeria became a Republic, with Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe as its first President.

Nigeria’s independence was the culmination of decades of struggle, reforms, and sacrifice. From the Clifford Constitution of 1922 to the independence motion of 1953, each step was crucial in dismantling colonial rule. These milestones remind us that independence was not a gift, but a victory secured by the determination of Nigerians across generations.
