Nigeria is introducing a digital process for selecting recipients of the 2026 World Teachers’ Day awards as part of efforts to make the recognition of outstanding teachers more transparent, accountable and efficient.
The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, announced the development at a press briefing in Abuja ahead of the World Teachers’ Day celebration scheduled for October 5.
Why is the government digitising the awards selection?
According to the minister, the selection process coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Education has been digitalised in line with African Union guidelines.
The government says the move is intended to improve accountability, enhance the security of the selection process and create a reliable digital record that can be referenced in the future.
The digital approach is expected to reduce the limitations associated with a largely manual selection process and provide a more structured way of identifying and recognising teachers who have made significant contributions to education.
How many teachers will receive awards?
A total of 14 awardees are expected to be recognised during the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration.
The three best-performing teachers will receive cars, while other award recipients will receive laptops.
A Federal Unity College that records outstanding performance will also receive a bus.
What is the theme for World Teachers’ Day 2026?
The 2026 celebration is themed “Transforming the Teacher Profession for Africa’s Future.”
The theme will focus on five major areas:
– Innovation
– Teacher mobility
– Artificial Intelligence
– Inclusion
– Professional excellence
The Federal Ministry of Education says these areas are central to preparing teachers for the changing demands of education in Africa.
What does innovation mean for teachers?
The innovation pillar will encourage teachers to adopt creative approaches to teaching and make effective use of digital tools.
It will also promote locally relevant solutions that can improve teaching and learning in Nigerian schools.
How will teacher mobility be addressed?
The mobility component is expected to promote teacher exchange programmes, cross-border collaboration and more flexible career pathways for educators.
The aim is to create opportunities for teachers to learn from education systems and colleagues beyond their immediate environments.
What role will AI play?
Artificial Intelligence is another major focus of this year’s celebration.
According to Ahmad, AI can support personalised learning and data-driven decision-making while reducing some of the administrative workload placed on teachers.
However, she stressed the need for AI to be used ethically and inclusively.
The government’s position is that technology should support teachers rather than replace their professional roles.
What does inclusion mean?
The inclusion pillar will focus on ensuring that learners have access to quality education regardless of their gender, ability, socioeconomic background or location.
This places emphasis on reducing inequalities that can prevent some children and young people from benefiting fully from education.
Why is professional excellence important?
The government says improving the teaching profession requires more than awards and recognition.
Professional excellence will focus on continuous professional development, fair remuneration, supportive education policies and greater recognition of teachers’ leadership roles.
The minister said the government was working to attract and retain highly qualified professionals in the teaching profession as part of efforts to improve learning outcomes.
What other activities are planned?
The 2026 World Teachers’ Day programme will include a symposium aimed at creating awareness, promoting critical thinking and discussing issues affecting the teaching profession.
A march-past will also be held in Abuja on October 5, with teachers from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory expected to participate.
The event is expected to showcase Nigeria’s cultural diversity and heritage.
What about verification of Nigerian certificates abroad?
The minister also disclosed that the Federal Ministry of Education has automated its Education Support Services department.
The system will allow foreign institutions and employers to verify Nigerian academic qualifications online.
The government says this is intended to help tackle fraudulent certificate claims while protecting Nigerians with genuine qualifications who seek educational or employment opportunities abroad.
What is the NUT saying?
The National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Audu Amba, represented by the Deputy National President, Kizito Kalu, said teachers must remain central to education despite rapid technological changes.
The union called for greater investment in teacher training, welfare and professional development.
It also stressed that Artificial Intelligence and other emerging technologies should strengthen the teaching profession rather than diminish the role of teachers.
Why does World Teachers’ Day matter?
World Teachers’ Day is observed globally every October 5 and has been celebrated since 1994.
The 2026 edition also marks 60 years of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, an international framework that addresses teachers’ rights, responsibilities and working conditions.
For Nigeria, the 2026 celebration comes at a time when the education sector is facing growing demands for better teacher welfare, professional development, digital skills and the effective use of emerging technologies.
